With the season for family gatherings and holiday celebrations here, Carter BloodCare said it appreciates the thousands of blood donors who help provide hope to Texas patients who need blood transfusions.

The next drive is Dec. 19 from 1-6 p.m. at Super Wal-Mart.

November and December are two of the toughest times of the year for blood collections. Regular donors often travel or get busy during the holidays, forgetting to schedule time to give blood.

In the meantime, patients in local hospitals need blood for scheduled surgeries, while holiday travel can increase the demand for blood due to accidents and injuries.

Giving blood is easy and relatively painless. Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with a parent’s consent), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in general good health.

Donors should eat a nourishing meal before donating. Be prepared to present photo identification.
