Competing at the 2009 Burnet Bulldog Classic, the Lady Badgers put an end to a five-game losing skid but not before the top-ranked Class 2A team in the state, Brock, handed Lampasas a sound 56-28 loss.
PHOTOS BY RICHARD AKRIDGE The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 17-point lead, 21-4, by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Badgers, led by Sarah Bishop’s 11 points, didn’t post consecutive field goals until the fourth quarter.
“I think they are definitely one of the top five teams in the state,” Lampasas head coach Stuart Beckwith said. “It doesn’t matter how many A’s you put behind their name.
“Brock is just a good team.”
The Lady Eagles went on to win the tournament championship.
Despite the one-sided defeat, the Lady Badgers bounced back and beat Fredericksburg 51-47 in their second game of the day.
After playing close through three quarters, Lampasas outscored its opponent 15-9 in the final period to win its first game since Nov. 20.
Guard Ethan Byers was the Badgers’ sole representative on the all-tournament team after helping lead Lampasas to the consolation championship. “We played a lot better in the second half,” Beckwith said. “It was the first game in awhile that we had balanced scoring.”
Senior post Lauren Barlow led the team with 17 points, while five others added at least five points. Madison Morris (8 pts.) and Kayla Prescott (7 pts.) followed Barlow in the scoring column.
The win vaulted the Lady Badgers into the consolation championship game, where they fell to Houston Second Baptist by four points, 51-47.
Prescott (15 pts.) and Barlow (14 pts.) were the team’s top scorers, with Jennifer Herron and Hailey Morrison contributing seven points apiece.
Trailing by just five points, 27- 22, at halftime, Lampasas could post only six points in the third quarter.
The Lady Badgers (4-8) return to the court tonight, facing Faith Academy at home at 7 p.m. The freshman team is off, but the junior varsity will play at 5:15 p.m.
After losing their first six games of the season, the Badgers worked their way into the win column with a 46-43 victory over Gatesville in the second round of the Vicki Mitchell-Lauren Timmons Fifth Annual Memorial Basketball Tournament in Lorena.
The Badgers opened the tournament with a 73-44 loss to Waco High but rebounded behind Eduardo Davila’s 12-point performance to beat Gatesville.
In the consolation championship, Lampasas knocked off Salado by 13 points, 52-39, to improve the varsity record to 2-6 on the season.
“Our offense began to gel,” head coach Scott Harrelson said. “We beat the press and we kept them off the boards.
“Several players played well and showed that we are coming together.”
Senior guard Ethan Byers was named to the all-tournament team after he combined for 27 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists and four steals in three games.
Byers’ best overall performance came in the Badgers’ first win of the season when he connected on two of three shots and three of four free throws for seven points. He also grabbed six rebounds to go with four assists and four steals.
“Byers was selected to the alltournament [team] and I felt Astin Murray, Aaron Reyna and Davila all could have been selected for their play in the last two games,” Harrelson said.
Murray scored 25 points during the tournament, while Davila contributed 24. Reyna produced two points, two assists and three steals in the consolation championship game.
The Badgers travel to Burnet tonight with tipoff set for 7:45 p.m. The junior varsity team will play the Bulldogs at 5:15 p.m., with the freshmen to follow at 6:30 p.m.
