Plans for new jail

2009-12-08 / Letters

A month ago, I received my tax statement telling me I owe Lampasas County over $2,000 in taxes for undeveloped land I own in the eastern part of the county. I’ve owned this property for 15 years.

My goodness, two years ago the taxes were not that high. It has more than doubled. With the economy being in the condition it’s in, how do you get blood out of a turnip? What has caused the taxes to go that high?

I cannot vote on issues because I live out of town, and I have no children going to the new Lampasas High School. I do strongly believe in a good education., so I have no problem with paying my part to educate the children of Lampasas.

However, I must continue to raise the question of whatever happened to the issue of building a new county jail? Am I paying for the prisoners to be transported to out-of-county jails?

The building of a new county jail remains an issue with me, and it should be for all the taxpayers of Lampasas County. Meeting after meeting, this issue remains dormant or not even mentioned at the Lampasas County Commissioners Court meetings. Somebody please tell me something about this issue, because I see taxation here without representation, and my property taxes going up!

Lampasas County has a new sheriff. Sheriff David Whitis has come up with a plan! This issue has been toyed around with for way, way too long. It’s costing us taxpayers way too much money!

Let’s not ever forget that all elected officials are accountable to the taxpayers, however I cannot vote on issues but I pay a lot of taxes to Lampasas County.

Wake up, Lampasas County residents! Please make them accountable to all, represented and nonrepresented!
