Wiginton guides Mexia to area in state playoffs

The Mexia Blackcats of District 19AAA, coached by Lee Wiginton, were co-champions and bi-district champions for the second consecutive year.

Before being at Mexia, Wiginton coached at Comfort and Bosqueville, making the playoffs in three of four years at each school.

Mexia was an area finalist in 2008, losing to Gilmer, which was ranked No. 1 in Class AAA at the time. This past season, the Blackcats lost in their area game to Carthage, the defending state champion in Class AAA and that classification’s No. 2 team now.

Wiginton has been a varsity coach for 16 years and has coached in 28 playoff games.

In Wiginton’s 10 years as a head football coach, his record is 80-43, and his teams have been in the state playoffs eight of those seasons. In addition, he has been named Coach of the Year in six of the 10 years.

The Lampasas graduate of 1989 was on a team of seniors who were undefeated district champions their last two years. Badger teams of 1985 through 1989 had five consecutive undefeated district championships.
