After rolling to an easy victory in the season-opener, Lometa’s varsity boys’ basketball team improved to 2-0 with a dominating 64-point win, 100-36, over Evant Tuesday evening.
The visiting Elks never stood a chance against the blazing-hot Hornets, falling behind by 29 points at the end of the first quarter. At halftime, Evant was staring up from a 54-point hole, trailing 67-13.
Evant produced its best quarter following the break, scoring 16 points, but it was not enough as Felipe Nava exploded for nine of his 16 points in the period, helping the Hornets increase the lead to 60 points at 89-29.
Nava finished the contest as the team’s second-leading scorer, two points behind Dalton Parsons’ game-high 18 points. Parsons connected on seven field goals, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Charlie Wagner (13 points), Dylan Straley (12 points), Brandon Lilly (11 points) and Colt Maldonado (10 points) each contributed solid offensive performances in the win. Hector Rivera added nine points, while brothers Junior Castruita and Edgar Castruita each scored six points.
The only real disappointment for Lometa during the blowout came at the free-throw line, where the Hornets hit just 10 of their 22 attempts.
In other action, prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Hornets won their season-opener on the road against Cherokee by 17 points, 57-40.
Competing with just seven players, Cherokee managed to keep things interesting in the first quarter, but Lometa constructed a 10-point barrier by halftime, at 24- 14.
The varsity boys have dominated recent opponents. The Indians trimmed the Hornets’ lead to six points by the end of the third period, but a 25-point Lometa outburst in the final eight minutes secured the victory.
Straley (16 points) and Rivera (14 points) led the Hornets offensively. Rivera added 10 of his points after halftime.
While the boys are off to an impressive start, the Lady Hornets are still searching for consistency.
The varsity girls’ team began the season with a 23-point loss, 57-34, at Blanket.
A few days later, Lometa picked up its first victory of the season by knocking off Santa Anna in its own gym.
The Lady Hornets rushed out of the gates to score 24 points in the first quarter and never looked back, winning 66-48.
Maribel Reyes posted a teamhigh 14 points, and Sasha Sosa added 12, including eight in the opening period.
After being idle for nearly two weeks, the girls returned to the court, but found themselves on the wrong end of a game-opening outburst.
Cherokee used an 18-9 firstquarter run to build a comfortable lead it never relinquished en route to a 47-36 home win.
Reyes led the Lady Hornets with 15 points in the contest.
With three games in the books, Lometa played its home-opener Tuesday evening, hosting Evant.
There was little for the home crowd to get excited about, however, as the Lady Hornets fell by 46 points, 73-27.
Perhaps still drowsy from the Thanksgiving day tryptophan intake, Lometa scored just five points in the first quarter.
The Lady Elks did not suffer from the same problem, scoring 22 points in the first quarter.
Lometa responded with 13 points in the second quarter, but could only muster nine more after the break. Evant scored 35 points in the second half alone.
Despite just three field goals, Reyes again led the Lady Hornets offensively with eight points.
Both varsity teams are in action this weekend, playing in the Rising Star tournament.
*** The junior varsity Hornets cruised to victory against Evant, winning 39-19 at home.
Chris Scarborough was the game’s leading scorer with 12 points, while Colt D’Spain added 10 points. Jose Acevedo chipped in seven.
The Lometa Junior High School boys’ team defeated Star by 31 points, 48-17, behind Eric Nichols' 12-point performance. Shane Stone added nine for the Hornets.
The girls’ junior high team also won, knocking off Star 26-12.
Alexis West scored 12 for the Lady Hornets. Laci Moreno and Mikhaila Barnett each scored four points.
