Longtime teacher Eleanor Head, 95, of Lampasas died Dec. 1, 2009, at her residence.

Funeral services are Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Pastor George Lumpkin officiating. Burial will follow at Lometa City Cemetery.

Ms. Head was born in Mills County, the daughter of James Welch and Lula Owens Head.

She graduated from Lometa High School in 1930 and from San Angelo Junior College in 1932. She then graduated with honors with a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Texas, and earned a master of arts from the University of North Texas.

Ms. Head’s 41-year teaching career began in Lometa and later in Devine. She then moved to Austin where she was an educator for 31 years, retiring in 1974.

She was very involved in church work and had taught adult Sunday School classes for 45 years.

Ms. Head volunteered at the Love Center for many years. She was an active member and former president of the Retired Teacher’s Association, Bud and Blossom Club, Church Women United and United Methodist Women.

She taught a women’s Bible study and attended Mt. Wesley Schools of Christian Mission.

Ms. Head had traveled to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and Israel.

Survivors include a brother, Thurman Head and wife, Syble, of Goldthwaite; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Vonnie Price, Ola B. Landers, Nadine Core and Ruby

Brazil.
