Mrs. Hughes
Alice Amanda Vernor Hughes died Nov. 27, 2009, at age 89.
Graveside services are Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.
Mrs. Hughes was born in Lampasas, the daughter of Harvey Dimmitt and Audrey Ollie Barber Vernor.
She lived in Lampasas until her family moved to Waco, where she earned a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University.
Mrs. Hughes worked as an executive secretary at the Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant. Subsequently, she became a court reporter for the Texas Circuit Court, traveling with the court to several small Texas towns each week.
Eventually, Mrs. Hughes secured an appointment as the court reporter for the 61st Judicial Court in Houston, where she served for many years.
She retired in 1993 and moved to Los Alamos, N.M.
Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Methodist church, was an avid reader and belonged to the Los Alamos Book Group. Her hobbies included knitting sweaters.
She is survived by a son, Henry Grady Hughes III, and his wife, Betty Ann Gunther of Los Alamos; a sister, Audrey Dee Vernor Free of Falls Church, Va.; a grandson, David Grady Hughes of Seattle, Wash; several nieces and a nephew; and several grandnieces
and grandnephews.
