Pierians' guest discusses nation's first president
The GFWC/TFWC Pierian Club met Nov. 10 at Keystone Square Museum. Co-hostesses were Crystal Hammett, Mary Black Davis and June Davis.
President Susan Browder welcomed special guests Amy McDaniel, president of the 36 Club; Carol Hauser; and speaker for the day, Beverly Hammett.
After a brief business meeting, Crystal Hammett introduced Beverly Hammett, a member of the Speakers’ Bureau of the Bayou Bend-Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. She has served as a traveling docent since 2000.
Fascinated by President George Washington, the speaker has been studying his life for about nine years. She spoke to members about Washington and the “material culture.” She discussed the former president’s early years after he lost his father, and of being mentored by Lord Fairfax of Virginia.
Washington’s life was discussed from his military service, when he met and married Martha Custis, to when he was elected first president of the United States in 1789.
The Pierian Club’s annual Christmas Concert and Tea will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. The event is free to the public and refreshments will be served afterward.
The Carol of Lights and Lighted Christmas Parade is Dec. 4.
Keystone Square Museum’s Christmas tree and gingerbread contests will be held this year along with a bake sale on Dec. 4 at the museum.
