Nov. 24th Honorary Coach
"Dr. Hickenbottom is an outstanding Math teacher. I still use the geometry and calculus skills he taught me. They are important, but the non-academic lessons I learned in his class are priceless. The wisdom he shared continues to apply to situations and decisions I am making on a daily basis." Heath Cofield, class of ‘08
Wayne Hickenbottom definitely is a rare breed. Dr. “H” was born and reared in Tacoma, Wash. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Puget Sound in mathematics, economics and computer science. He is what one might call a “geek.” But what a geek he is!
Upon obtaining his BS, he continued into graduate school and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota. While there, he set an unofficial record for attending the most sports events while still completing a degree.
Armed with all those degrees and knowledge, Dr. Hickenbottom was hired as an assistant professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin (another Longhorn!). He continued to teach at UT full time until 1999.
After a short stint teaching in Killeen, the Lampasas Independent School District was fortunate enough to hire him in January 2000. Anyone who had a student at Lampasas High School between 2000 and 2008 was fortunate to benefit from his unique and effective style of teaching some of the most difficult subjects: geometry, pre-calculus and AP calculus. While he tenured at LHS, Dr. Hickenbottom continued to teach summer school at UT, and he returned there in the fall of 2008 to teach full time once again. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics in the College of Liberal Arts at UT.
Dr. Hickenbottom is married to Debbie Fuller and both now live in Austin. They enjoy escaping to their home in Ruidoso, N.M. at Christmas and to a country place near Hico during the summer and over spring breaks.
The couple said they often miss the people of Lampasas and living in the historic home they restored, the Barnes House, on West Third Street. Especially, however, they miss the students of LHS. Dr. Hickenbottom stays in contact with former students who are attending UT, as well as with at least one student at Texas A&M University.
