John Roy Smith Sr., 64, of Lampasas died Nov. 19, 2009, at Seton Highland Lakes Hospital in Burnet.

Graveside services are Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. at Smith Cemetery at Oakalla.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 15, 1945, in Lampasas, the son of Loney Willard and Almer Lunsford Smith. He attended local schools and served in the National Guard Airborne Division.

Mr. Smith married Nancy Jane Clayton on Nov. 8, 1963, in Lampasas, and she preceded him in death in 2003.

He was a heavy equipment operator and had worked for the city of Lampasas for a number of years. Mr. Smith was a member of Northside Baptist Church (formerly Second Baptist). He also served in the Lampasas Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years.

Survivors include a son, John Smith Jr. and wife, Melanie, of Lampasas; two daughters, Janie Miller and husband, Stephen, of Salem, Oregon, and Cathy Short and husband, Floyd, of Lampasas; one sister, Bettie Van Darlin of Montpelier, Idaho; two brothers, Loney W. Smith Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Burnet, and Eugene W. Smith and wife, Karen, of Lampasas; 10 grandchildren, Christina Kelley, Nancy Miller, Cortney Smith, Shana Logan, Sierra Logan, McKayla Logan, Jared Short, Marissa Short, Sabrina Short and Constance Short; and one greatgrandchild, Payton Seale.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jordan Rene Smith, and by a brother, Raymond Lee Smith.
