Nov. 23rd Honorary Coach

"I nominated Ms. Myers, my Freshman English teacher, because I always knew I could go to her for help, even in my senior year." -Clay Tyner c/o 2008

Clay Tyner, 2008 graduate of Lampasas High School, nominated Shelly Myers, LHS freshman English teacher.

Shelly Myers, an English teacher and Teen Leadership Course leader, was born and reared in Lampasas. As many do, she went to kindergarten at First Baptist Church and then through the LISD public school system for all 12 years of her education. After graduating from LHS, Ms. Myers attended Central Texas College for two years before transferring to the University of Texas. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1991.

For the next four years, she lived in Austin and worked for the Texas Medical Association Insurance Trust and ITT Residential Mortgage. Ms. Myers’ education continued in 1995, as she earned her second B.A. in English one year later. She went through the alterative certification program at ESC Region XIII and taught English I, Spanish I, Conversational Spanish I and ESL for three years. Ms. Myers also was the Student Council sponsor during this time.

She moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., and attended Northern Arizona University and worked toward her master’s degree for two years, in liberal studies, focusing in education and alternative/charter curricula.

By 2001, Ms. Myers returned to Central Texas and taught Pre-AP English for two years in Burnet until she returned to her hometown of Lampasas in 2003. Ms. Myers continues to teach Pre-AP English to freshmen, as well as English III and now Teen Leadership. She served, once again, as the Student Council sponsor here at LHS from August 2004 to May 2009, but she has forfeited that now for the sake of continuing her own education at graduate school. Coupling her work in Arizona with her studies in library science at Sam Houston State University, she will complete her master’s in December 2010.

As evidenced by her own pursuits, Shelly Myers loves teaching and continual learning, and she loves working with students. She said she loves to see them achieve their goals, get excited about learning and, in particular, learn about literature. Most importantly, she loves seeing them excited about their future.

Outside of her hours in the classroom (behind the lectern and as a student herself), Ms. Myers likes to play in the dirt, planting and tending to plants, particularly the flowering variety. She enjoys cooking and baking, but most of all she takes great pleasure in reading. Her other hobbies include listening to live music (she and Mr. Guszak need to hook up) and being outside in the sunshine. Ms. Myers’ family in Lampasas consists of her two sisters -- Misty, who works at Metroplex Hospital, and Colby, soon to graduate from Texas A&M, and her parents, Jim and Gayle Myers of Lometa. She is a dog lover but isn’t home enough to give a dog the attention it may need, so she has pet cats, who are aloof enough not to be bothered about whether she is home or not.
