With a group of football players just recently joining the varsity basketball team, Lampasas simply could not find its rhythm on the court, falling to Belton by 23 points, 66-43, on the road.

“We were disjointed and struggled to run any offense [with] the influx of players who are trying to adjust to the change in sports,” head coach Scott Harrelson said. “There were some good signs of things to come in the future, but there was not much coordination between the players. That I am sure will improve.

“We played hard and never quit, but we must get better each day.”

Lampasas never stood much of a chance in Belton as the Tigers leaped out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter. After going into halftime ahead by 15 points, 35-20, Belton used a 19-8 run in the third quarter to put the contest well out of the Badgers’ reach.

The bright spot for Lampasas was the play of Eduardo Davila, who scored 24 points, including 14 of the team’s 15 fourth-quarter points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots.

Sophomore Brandon Scott was the team’s second-leading scorer with eight points.

Outside of Davila’s nine-of-14 shooting performance, the Badgers connected on just six of 26 shots from the field and, as a team, missed 11 free throws. Only four players scored in the game for Lampasas.

In addition to the shooting woes, Lampasas committed 25 turnovers, while forcing only 14.

“The two areas we have to be good in -- defensive boxouts and turnovers -- weren’t good,” Harrelson said. “[We] gave up 28 offensive rebounds and had 25 turnovers, giving up 26 fastbreak points and 16 put-back points on offensive rebounds.”

Lampasas returns to the court tonight, playing their home-opener against Lanier at 8 p.m.
