Girls working out season's early kinks
After a bumpy start to the basketball season, the Lady Hornets appear to be rolling smoothly.
Lometa opened its season by traveling to Blanket and being smothered by the home team 57- 34.
But in less than a week, the Lady Hornets completely turned things around, picking up their first win of the season last Friday night, defeating Santa Anna by 18 points on the road.
Sparked by the hot hands of Sasha Sosa and Kylie Bradley early in the contest, the Lady Hornets leaped out to an 11-point advantage by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Lometa held Santa Anna to just five points in the second quarter.
By the end of the third period, Lometa constructed a 20-point lead at 49-29 before cruising to victory.
Maribel Reyes recorded a teamhigh 14 points in the win, including seven in the fourth quarter. Sosa finished with 12 points, and Bradley scored nine.
In the season-opener at Blanket, no player scored more than 11 points. Bradley was Lometa’s top point producer, contributing 11 to the final score with six coming in the first quarter.
After trailing by just five at the end of the opening period, Blanket pushed its lead to 11 points, 30-19, by halftime.
The Lady Hornets were outscored 17-7 in the third quarter and trailed by 21 points entering the final eight minutes.
Sosa tallied eight in the loss to complement Bradley’s team-high score, and Reyes chipped in seven points.
The Lady Hornets did not play this week, but return to the court Tuesday for a road game against Cherokee. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Lometa plays its first home game of the season one week later, hosting Evant.
