RTA to meet next month in Lometa
The Lampasas County Retired Teachers Association met Nov. 3 at the Lampasas Independent School District Board Room.
President Mary Casbeer conducted the business, and Gene Landrum and David Hausmann led the group in several songs.
Julia Landrum reported on the District XII Fall Workshop she attended with Mrs. Casbeer in Waco.
Mrs. Landrum outlined some of the benefits of membership in the Texas Retired Teachers Association, including scholarships for children of members studying education; one-time help for educators during a disaster; and grants for active teachers.
Members voted to make a donation to the foundation following the report.
Committee chairmen gave reports, including Julia Phillips, book chairman, who collected money to purchase books for the county's kindergarten students.
Members were reminded to keep records of their volunteer hours and “steps” to be reported at the end of the fiscal year.
Mrs. Landrum introduced the speaker, D’Anne Willis, who spoke and sang about the relationships she is most thankful for during the Thanksgiving season.
Next meeting is Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Lometa United Methodist Church. Members are asked to bring a covered dish to share to accompany venison and turkey to be provided by Mrs. Casbeer.
Janie Potts will be in charge of the holiday program, and all retirees are invited to attend.
Members were encouraged to attend the upcoming Lometa gathering and to contact and invite other retirees who do not regularly attend.
Local association membership is just under 100, and the Lampasas chapter is making an effort to pass the century mark, said a club representative.
The Texas Retired Teachers Association is the largest association in the nation for retired teachers (educators), and its membership is 70,000.
All retired public school or higher education employees are eligible for membership.
