Former resident to exhibit painting

"Red Door: Near Framingham Station," a painting by Roy Perkinson, has been selected for exhibit at The Cambridge Art Association galleries in Massachusetts. The Cambridge Art Association of Wellesley, Mass., has announced the selection of a painting by Roy Perkinson, a native of Dallas and former Lampasas resident, for its upcoming exhibition, “RED: More than a Color.” Perkinson’s oil painting, “Red Door: Near Framingham Station,” is a landscape representing a group of buildings near the Framingham train station, including a portion of the well-known 19-century station, which was built by the famous architect, H.H. Richardson.

“I saw this scene one day as I was walking near the station, which is not far from my studio,” said Perkinson of his painting. “I loved the geometry of the buildings and the way that the strong sunlight accentuated their colors against the late spring sky.”

The juror for the exhibition was Carl Belz, director emeritus of the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, and a teacher, prolific art writer, editor, speaker and art savant.

Encouraging emerging artists locally and globally, seeking out nationally known artists and finding innovative works, Belz selected Perkinson’s work from among 600 entries throughout New England.

Born in Dallas, Perkinson spent his early childhood in Lampasas, and graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dallas.

His father, Guy Perkinson, studied art at Southern Methodist University and was an early influence on his son’s development, as was his mother, Mary Kathryn Owens, who also studied at SMU and taught music in the Dallas area. She is the daughter of Roy and Wilmuth Walker of Lampasas. (Walker has served as mayor of Lampasas.)

In the 1960s, Perkinson studied art at the Atelier Chapman Kelley in Dallas. He also studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, art history at Boston University, and studio art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Specializing in landscapes, he works in oil, pastel and watercolor, and has painted in numerous sites, including Texas, Massachusetts and throughout New England, as well as in Great Britain, France and Italy.

Founded in 1944, The Cambridge Art Association is one of greater Boston’s premier showplaces for painting, photography, sculpture and art works in mixed media. It has two exhibition galleries in Cambridge.

The exhibition, “RED,” runs through Jan. 14, 2010. An opening reception will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at both galleries. An award ceremony will take place at University Place at 7 p.m.
