Democratic Women discuss changes

Highland Lakes Democratic Women met in October with a three-person panel that discussed how they believe things had changed for the better due to acts of Congress passed by Democrats.

Annette Ussery shared a list of 45 items including Women’s Suffrage, minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and the GI Bill of Rights.

Ann Hunter spoke on the labor movement and how workers’ rights have improved due to Democrats working to make child labor illegal, shortening the work week and giving workers a living wage.

Dr. Carole Buchanan spoke about the history of labor. She shared stories of her teaching on the subject.

To avoid conflict with Thanksgiving, the next meeting is scheduled one week earlier and is set for Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Francesco’s Italian Restaurant in Marble Falls.

Speakers will include Chris Akins, who will discuss his exploratory committee for a possible campaign for District 11 House of Representatives, and Dick Maddern, Burnet County Democratic chair. He will discuss the goals for county Democrats.

Reservations should be made to Marjorie Dearmont at (512) 355-3886 or by sending an email to mdearmont@aol.com.
