Lometa to face Calvert
PHOTOS BY CHERI JAY-WIENECKE Lometa Hornets Manuel Hernandez, Ramiro Hernandez and Charlie Wagner gave maximum effort in the team's win over Buckholts last week. Since the first day of practice, the Hornets have been eyeballing tonight's game against Calvert.
While most rebuilding programs would look to avoid facing off with top 10 schools, Lometa welcomes the opportunity to knock off the powerhouse, especially after the Hornets made short work of their two other district foes.
Lometa needed just one half of play to dispose of both Prairie Lea and Buckholts, as the Hornets won by a combined score of 112-0 to set up tonight's battle for the district championship.
Although the Trojans will be a much more formidable opponent, if the Hornets continue their efficient ways from last week they might pull off the upset.
Lometa posted 38 secondquarter points en route to a 60-0 shutout victory over Buckholts last Friday night at home.
The Hornets ran just 17 plays on offense but gained 248 yards against the Buckholts defense. In fact, Lometa posted only two first downs in the entire game as it carved up the Badgers for big play after big play.
Scotty Hernandez and Junior Castruita dive for a loose ball. Although Lometa earned 248 of its yards on the ground, the passing attack was just as danger- ous.
Quarterback Charlie Wagner continues to grow into the position. He has routinely produced solid games after taking over for Dalton Parsons, who broke his arm several weeks ago.
Against Buckholts, Wagner needed just five pass attempts to put three touchdowns on the board. Each came from inside the opponent's red zone, as Felipe Nava hauled in an 11-yard score, Parsons caught a nine-yard touchdown pass, and Colter Burr received a four-yard toss.
The quarterback also showed off his legs against the Badgers, but so did everyone else.
Lometa split five rushing touchdowns between five players with Wagner leading the way in yardage, churning up 77 yards on three rushes. Also finding the end zone were Cody Brister, Ramiro Hernandez, Scott Hernandez and Junior Castruita.
Dalton Parsons tries to head off a Buckholts runner. Defensively, the Hornets were on point, forcing three fumbles, recording a sack and limiting the visitors to negative total yardage.
The Badgers rushed the ball 17 times, losing 32 yards in the process, and completed seven of 18 passes for just 10 yards.
Four Hornets — Juan Moreno, Castruita, Parsons and Scott Hernandez — tallied six tackles apiece, and five others posted at least three.
The win puts Lometa's record at 8-1 on the year, with a 2-0 district showing.
Calvert comes into tonight's district title game unblemished with a 9-0 record and a No. 10 ranking by SixManFootball.com after knocking off Prairie Lea and Buckholts by a combined score of 107-6.
The Hornets will have added motivation in the form of revenge after Calvert thumped them 59-14 in last year's season finale.
Considering both teams already are in the playoffs, tonight's matchup will determine who gets a first-round bye. But, just like last year, there will be hardware on the line as well, and the Hornets are looking to make a statement by stealing the district crown away from the Trojans.
Cody Brister makes tracks for the end zone in the Hornets' huge win over Buckholts. In fact, they've been waiting all year for this opportunity.

The Lometa Junior High "A" team beat Zephyr 43-26, but the "B" team was not as successful. It fell by five points, 18-13, to May.
