General says lone shooter alive, in stable condition

Contrary to previous reports, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone confirmed Thursday evening that the suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was not killed and is in stable condition.

"His death is not imminent," Cone said.

Hasan was named the lone shooter responsible for killing 12 people and wounding 31 more.

The female police officer who was reported as being killed by Hasan is alive and in stable condition following surgery.  She is believed to have shot Hasan prior to being wounded.  Updated at 8:41 p.m.

The lockdown on Fort Hood has been lifted.  Parents of students at any of the nine schools located on the base may now pick up their children. 

A 12th victim has died at a hospital, according to authorities, bringing the number of dead to 13, including the shooter, and the number of wounded 30.  Updated at 7:19 p.m.

Authorities have announced all three suspected shooters were soldiers.  Two gunmen are in custody and another was killed. 

One of the casualties was identified as a civilian police officer. 

Fort Hood remains on lockdown. 

Lampasas Dispatch Record Publisher Jim Lowe reports Staff Sgt. Rick Ortega, of Copperas Cove, narrowly avoided being in the line of fire at the Soldiers' Readiness Processing Center after forgetting his medical checklist at home.

Ortega, who recently completed a two-year deployment to Iraq, went to his residence to obtain the checklist and by the time he returned, Fort Hood was on lockdown.

"I could have bee the first one shot or wounded," Ortega said.  "Or I could have helped someone."  Updated at 5:52 p.m.

At least 12 people are dead and 31 others have been injured following a shooting at Fort Hood.  Reports indicate multiple shooters were involved in the incident which took place around 1:30 p.m. Updated at 4:11 p.m.
