Pierians hear Boys & Girls Club program

The GFWC/TFWC Pierian Club met recently at the home of Johnnie Ewing. Co-hostesses were Bennie Bulloch and Nina Lee Rasmussen.

A program on the Boys and Girls Club was presented by board member J.W. Hutcherson and unit director Michael Blount. They said the club's mission is to enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible students.

Lampasas is part of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Texas and as such, receives support from Killeen, Georgetown, Gatesville and Copperas Cove.

There are 380 school-age members in the summer and afterschool program that includes pickup from schools for $20 per year. Homework help, games and snacks are provided each day during the school year. Also offered are programs on fine arts, photography, computers, drama and others.

During the summer, the club is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. .

On average, 80 children a day were served in the summer, with around 45 during the school year.

A fall soccer program, run by Steve Roberts, has almost 90 children participating.

The facility is at 1602 E. Ave. J, but plans are in the works to move into a portion of the former Lampasas Middle School building which was recently vacated. The Lampasas Independent School District Board of Trustees is looking into the matter and approval should come soon.

Hutcherson and Blount said the community's financial and volunteer support is vital to keep the club going.

After a brief business meeting, announcements were shared about upcoming community events.

Trunk or Treat is today at the former Wal-Mart building, and Squared Silly will be Saturday by Vision Lampasas! on Courtyard Square.

Also Saturday is a Halloween Ball with Jarrett Schaub at the Hostess House, hosted by the Green Frog. The Oran Milo Roberts Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas will benefit. For information, phone 556-4441.

The Pierian Club's 23rd annual Christmas Concert and Tea is Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Pianist Betty Ann Whitis and organist Jo Ater will entertain.

Community improvement committee member Mrs. Ewing reminded members about the recycling facility on FM 580 East. It accepts aluminum, paper, plastic milk and water bottles and other items. Information is available by phoning 556-8132.

Next meeting is at Keystone Square Museum with Beverly Hammett as guest speaker. A member of the Speakers' Bureau of Bayou Bend-Museum of Fine Arts, she will share information on the first U.S. president.

Co-hostesses will be June Davis and Mary Black Davis.
