Hornets making run at district title beginning with Prairie Lea team
By CLAY WHITTINGTON Staff Writer

After having aN open date in their schedule last Friday, the Hornets should be well rested for their run toward a district title.

Lometa begins its trek for the championship tonight at Prairie Lea (2-5). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Hornets bring a 6-1 record into the district-opener and are riding a four-game winning streak in which they have scored at least 60 points in each of the last three games.

Most recently, Lometa beat Evant 64-14 to end its non-district schedule with a bang.

Beating their old-time rival during homecoming was sweet, especially since the Hornets have not had many opportunities to celebrate at home.

Lometa has played three home games this season, but after opening the year with a 46-0 shutout victory over Covington, the Hornets spent the next month on the road.

Now, after spending each of the last three Fridays in Lometa, it is time for the Hornets to get back on the road and back to business.

Luckily, the road trip won't last long.

After tonight, the Hornets wrap up district play with home games against Buckholts and Calvert.

Although the varsity Hornets were off last week, football was still being played in Lometa.

The junior high team lost a fourth-quarter shootout to Buckholts, 39- 30.

The Hornets entered the final period trailing by a single point at 7-6, but they posted 18 points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the home team, Buckholts added 26 points to squeak out a victory.

Offensively, running back Albert Hernandez led the way with 115 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

The Hornets finished the game with 208 of their 318 yards of offense coming on the ground.
