Lawrence Charles Crain, 71, of Burnet County died Oct. 19, 2009, at his residence from cancer and a stroke.

Graveside services were Oct. 22 at Smithwick Cemetery at Marble Falls.

Mr. Crain was born April 12, 1938, in Corpus Christi, the son of Blanche Evelyn Rucker and James Thomas Crain. He spent his early years in Texas, New Mexico and California before the family moved to Bremerton, Wash., in 1955, where he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in December 1957.

He married Janet Elinor Lewis on April 18, 1958, and they moved to Altus, Okla.

After his military discharge, the Crains returned to Burnet until he was hired for Civil Service at Altus AFB. Mr. Crain continued his government employment for five years at Fort Hood.

Moving to Austin, he completed the United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ and Joiners’ apprenticeship program, earning a master carpenter’s certification in 1971. He worked on various projects in the Austin area, including the LBJ Library and Texas Memorial Stadium. He continued working in the Austin Highland Lakes area until he returned to work for Fort Hood in 1981, retiring in 1998.

They moved to Burnet County in 1985 where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, antique car restoration and genealogical research.

He is survived by his wife of Burnet; children, David and wife, Randa, of Sweeny, Diane and husband, Chuck Humphrey, of Ozark, Ark., and Darrell and wife, Michelle, of Burnet; siblings, Melvin and wife, Pat, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Tommy and wife, Debbie, and Rebecca Bingle of Burnet; and 13 grandchildren, Rhea Holik, Melody Cobb, Zachary Crain, Destiny Stibbens, Clairessa Campbell, Madelyn Humphrey, Abigail, Lydia, Ethan, Samuel and Josiah Humphrey, and Austin and Dillon Crain.

Other survivors include 11 great-grandchildren, Ashlee Holik, Blaine and Emma Cobb, Miles and Abigail Stebbins, Mackenzie Malone, Nathaniel, Collin and Simon Campbell, and Alivia and Erik Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Billie Jean Phyle, and a brother, Laurice Ray Crain.

Pallbearers were Zachary Crain, Ethan Humphrey, Austin Crain, Samuel Humphrey, Jason Holik and Travis Cobb. Honorary pallbearers were Ken Bernhard, William DuBose, Jerry Ratliff, James Smith, Leeman Foster, Bill Manning and James Roberts.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital or the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge of Lubbock.
