Firm wins military contract
Guyco Inc. of Lampasas won an $89.2 million contract to renovate 13 Army barracks and a central energy plant at Fort Hood.
The Army barracks were built in the 1970s to accommodate the allvolunteer Army, after the end of the draft used during the Vietnam War.
For the renovation, Guyco will perform engineering analysis, evaluation and testing of the structures. The contractor will use the findings to resolve a mold growth issue, minimize vapor transmission, improve energy efficiency and seal the building to improve the living conditions for soldiers stationed there.
Goal of the renovation is to provide healthy apartment-style barracks by remodeling them to the design in which each soldier has a private room.
Guyco will renovate wall assemblies, stairwell and walkway vestibules, as well as mechanical system upgrades such as four-pipe distribution systems with heat recovery, heat pumps and central air-handling units for pressurization.
The 13 barracks constitute about 422,640 square feet of space and one central energy plant that provides heating and cooling for seven barracks and nine additional buildings.
Supporting work includes new chilled water underground distribution lines, underground heating distribution lines, replacement of existing water and sewer lines, parking lot repairs, landscaping, fire protection sprinklers and fire detection systems for the barracks.
Work is expected to be completed by March 2011.
Bids were solicited on the Web with six bids received by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District in Texas.
