Trapping, guard dogs help some ranchers cope; ongoing livestock deaths drain producer income
Charles Hood has tried just about everything: trapping, putting out cyanide, designing snares and spotlighting. Nothing seems to have helped the Lometa-area rancher protect his sheep from coyote attacks. Hood, who raises about 200 dorper cross sheep at his ranch in Long Cove in northwestern Lampasas County, has lost nearly 40 ewes and lambs since March. More...
Boil order not in effect in Lampasas

Because of a water treatment problem, Kempner Water Supply Corporation has issued a notice for customers to boil their water. A problem over the weekend at Central Texas Water Supply Corporation's treatment plant caused the quality of water to KWSC to fail Texas Commission for Environmental Quality standards for chlorine residuals. The problem has been corrected, but the water boiling notice will remain in effect until all bacteriological samples are taken by both CTWSC and KWSC and pass TCEQ lab standards. To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and making ice should be boiled and cooled before use. Water should be brought to a vigorous, rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. Alternatively, customers may buy bottled water or obtain water from another suitable source. Water system officials will notify customers when water is safe for consumption, and instructions will be issued to discontinue boiling. For additional information, phone David Sneed or other KWSC staff at (512) 932-3701 or (254) 547-9430. After-hours telephone number is 556-7511, and additional information is available at www.kempnerwsc.com. More...
