Characters come to life
LISD Superintendent Randy Hoyer portrayed Wyatt Earp. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to meet Laura Ingalls Wilder, Annie Oakley, Amelia Earhart, Jonas Salk, Wyatt Earp, Chris Evert or Helen Keller?
Students in Vickie McQueen's sixth-grade reading class at Lampasas Middle School found out recently when each of these famous people "visited" her students to discuss their past, to encourage students to read and share the importance of reading in one's life.
Each of the famous people gave a description of their own time period and their lives and discussed their ambitions and dreams.
They encouraged students to read and obtain as much information as they can during their lifetime.
"As busy as all of our lives are, we need to learn about our past and present and dream for the future," said Mrs. McQueen. "Books can give us this information, and the people who lived before us can offer many ideas and ambitions."
Following the classroom visits, students chose their own biography from the library, and each presented it during class.
Gladys Dickison stood in for Amelia Earhart. Classroom presenters included Amy Davis as Laura Ingalls Wilder, Nancy Yeary as Annie Oakley, Gladys Dickison as Amelia Earhart, Damon Faught as Jonas Salk, Randy Hoyer as Wyatt Earp, Margaret Lovett as Chris Evert and Renee Marsh as Helen Keller.
