Classy display of sportsmanship

2009-09-29 / Letters

To the city of Lampasas:

If you missed the football game on Sept. 18, well I guess you have heard by now you really missed an awesome game. Even after the drive back to Gatesville, I could hardly sleep that night.

I will let you check the stats for the final numbers on the game, but that is not why I am writing.

We are very proud of our Gatesville coaching staff. Coach Kyle Cooper and his staff are not only in charge of creating a winning football program but molding young men for the future. I am very proud of the sportsmanship Coach Cooper, his staff and our players demonstrate.

Football is a tough sport and is sometimes very, very hard to display good sportsmanship. It is seldom we are "upstaged" by sportsmanship. I am sorry to say I don't know your head coach's name, but the sportsmanship displayed at the end of the game is "over the top!"

For those of you who were not there, at the end of one of the hardest-fought battles I have ever seen, your Lampasas Badgers lined up from the 50-yard line to the goal line to pay respect to OUR school song. They had to wait until we quit celebrating so the song could be played. This is a show of class that is hard to find in any athletics these days.

Congratulations to your city, and thank you to your coaching staff for the true class shown at the end of this classic high school football game.

Thanks again, and best wishes on a great season!

Kyle A. Powell
