Democratic Women plan annual Labor Day Picnic
Woodie Jones The ninth annual Democratic Labor Day Picnic, sponsored by the Democratic Women's Association of Lampasas, will be Monday at the pavilion at the Hancock Park Golf Course, adjacent to the Hancock Springs Free-Flow Swimming Pool, off U.S. Highway 281 South.
Parking is available at the Hostess House and the pool lot.
Events will begin at 11:30 a.m., and last into the afternoon.
The public is invited to attend.
Hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings will be provided and prepared by the Hicks family. Donations will be accepted for each plate.
A cake auction will be held, with Dale Funk in charge. Contributors include Gayle Myers, Lewvon Hicks, Orabeth Hicks and Nona Jane Briggs.
All proceeds benefit the Democratic Women's Association of Lampasas and the Lampasas County Democratic Party.
Master of ceremonies will be Lampasas County Democratic Party Chairman Daniel Melder.
Guest speakers include Chief Justice Woodie Jones, 3rd Court of Criminal Appeals, and Kurt Kuhn, a candidate for Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals, hoping to replace Judge Jan Patterson.
Bill White Dorothy Persons, Lampasas County elections administrator, will share information about the November voting ballot and constitutional amendments.
Other invited speakers include Dr. Dian Ruud, state Democratic committeewoman; Houston Mayor Bill White, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Republican Kay Bailey-Hutchison; Tom Sheiffer, a gubernatorial candidate; and Matt Litt of Organizing for America, who will discuss his organization and its efforts to empower communities to get involved.
"This year promises to be another fruitful and informative year for the Democratic Labor Day picnic celebration," said a DWAL spokesman.
"Come and join the tradition and enjoy fellowship, become more informed, and make new friends in the process."
