Subvarsities split games at Manor

About the only thing that slowed down the Badgers' junior varsity team Thursday evening was the weather.

After lightning delayed the opening kickoff two hours, the JV Badgers lit up the scoreboard, defeating Manor 37-12 in an abbreviated game on its home field.

Lampasas' Justin Maldonado set up the game's first touchdown with an interception, and the rest was history.

Running back Secody Howard recorded a pair of scores. He found the end zone from two and three yards out, while quarterback Brandon Scott posted a 17-yard touchdown of his own.

Maldonado also showed off his offensive capabilities in the game, as he scored twice in the contest. The sophomore had touchdowns of 18 yards and 68 yards.

The game was ended due to lightning with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Defensively, the Badgers were solid, refusing to give up a score to the Mustangs' offense. Manor scored once on a kick return and then recovered a Lampasas fumble and ran it in for a touchdown.

"This win was a great start for the JV team," head junior varsity coach Keith Virdell said. "Anytime you win a game and still have things that you can improve on is a positive thing."

The freshman team was not as fortunate. The squad lost 14-9 in its season-opener after lightning delayed the game for an hour and a half.

Both teams host Rockdale Thursday evening in the home debut for the subvarsity squads. The freshman Badgers are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., with the junior varsity following at 7 p.m.
