Local sports unaffordable

2009-09-01 / Letters

I recently went with my family to sign up my two grandsons for soccer at the Boys and Girls Club. I was shocked when they told me the price was $80 each. My grandkids have played soccer through the Boys and Girls Club for three years, and the price was always $35. I can understand the need to raise the price a little, but this extreme price difference is shameful.

The only other option in Lampasas is Grace Fellowship church. They charge $60 for soccer. However, they seem to play by their own rules and not the regulated soccer rules the Boys and Girls Club teaches the kids.

Since the sports are not affordable in Lampasas, my grandkids have been forced to sign up for sports in Copperas Cove. They charge $40 each and have football going on now, not soccer. It was a hard decision to make, because I love Lampasas and want to spend my money in Lampasas. Sometimes after practice or games, my family goes out to eat in Lampasas. Now that money, too, will be going to Copperas Cove.

I wrote this letter to let people know they can play sports for a reasonable fee in Copperas Cove. I also hope the Boys and Girls Club will reconsider its fees. Most people in Lampasas have multiple children at home and will not be able to afford these prices.
