Badgers scrimmage Glen Rose tonight
Tonight is the night the Badgers have been waiting for.
Tonight they finally get to hit someone other than themselves.
After two weeks of physically taxing practices, Lampasas travels to Glen Rose for its only scrimmage before kicking off the regular-season schedule next Friday at home against Manor.
"I still wish they were hitting harder than they are, but we do have some hitters," head coach Joey McQueen said. "They're looking forward to getting out there and showing what they can do."
The scrimmage is set to start at 7 p.m. and will consist of several segments, including a live quarter.
The first-team offenses each will receive 20 plays, and then the second teams will go in for 15 plays. The first teams return to the field for 10 more plays before playing a live quarter of action. Standard scoring will be in effect.
The freshman and junior varsity teams will begin play at 5:30 p.m. The two squads will compete simultaneously, one at each end of the field, for approximately an hour with each school's offense on the field in 10-minute intervals.
In addition to wanting to see some hard hitting, McQueen will be eying his offensive line in particular.
"I want the offensive line to be disciplined with no mess-ups," the coach said. "I want them to come off the ball and hit somebody.
"I don't care if they get whipped, as long as they are on a person when the whistle blows. I hate looking around and seeing a lineman looking around."
McQueen has good reason to be concerned about his O-line's play, considering his offensive attack will be based primarily out of a slot-T scheme and emphasizes the running game.
The coach also will have added interest in his team's overall conditioning.
"We've got to be in the best shape [we can be in]," McQueen said. "We've got to know that when it's the fourth quarter we're not dead tired because that's when your mind wants to start to fade."
One more area of interest will be the play of quarterbacks Vann Millican and Colton Perkins. McQueen believes the ongoing competition between the two for the starting job will be decided tonight.
