The Lometa City Council made short work of its recent meeting as it addressed a routine agenda. In old business, the council approved Charles Miles as the city's accountant, stating that all city audits are complete and up to date.

In new business, an ordinance amendment regarding municipal speed zones passed unanimously. The ordinance establishes 30 miles per hour as the legal speed within the city limits, with the exception of school zones and U.S. Highway 183, which shall remain as posted.

The council also OK'd the scheduling of a birthday party at the Lometa Regional Park, an interlocal agreement with the Texas Municipal League regarding insurance, and postponed an item on the Atmos Energy franchise agreement until the next meeting.

In department reports, Lometa Police Chief John Harris said his department will be ordering radar and body armor with the funds remaining in the law enforcement account at the close of the fiscal year.

And in open forum, Lometa resident Margaret Williams, while offering her appreciation for the street paving that has taken place within the city, requested the council consider paving Oak Street.

Mayor Cynthia Kirby agreed the roadway is in need of immediate attention. "It's a disgrace to the community," said Mrs. Kirby. "We were just talking about it in our budget meeting. It's a concern for many people in town, and this council wants to do things for Lometa."

Also discussed in open forum was the matter of debris on the property of Irene Cavness. As a result of a neighbor's grant housing construction, the debris was pushed onto Mrs. Cavness' property in what was agreed as a temporary basis. The housing project is complete, however, and the debris remains.

Mrs. Cavness' son Roy Cavness reported that recently dumping has begun in the area, and it is attracting vermin. He requested the city remove the materials. Mrs. Kirby said action must be taken. "We dropped the ball, and we'll take care of it. I'll do my best to get that done," the mayor said.
