Consisting of nine members from the Lampasas High School varsity softball team that won the district championship last season, the Lampasas Shockers made an impressive run through the 2009 Elite College Showcase Tournament recently, finishing in the top 12 out of more than 150 teams.
Squads from Texas, Oklahoma, Nevada, Louisiana and Kansas descended upon Plano for the event. In addition, numerous college coaches were on hand to scout the talent, and the local kids put on quite a show for the inquisitive eyes.
Teams were broken into six-team pools with the winners advancing to the single-elimination tournament.
After winning their pool with a 3- 1-1 record, the Shockers earned the right to compete in the tournament where they promptly won their first game, defeating North Arkansas' NWA by a score of 5-2.
Behind a solid hitting effort, the Shockers easily knocked off the squad that boasted four seniors committed to playing for the University of Arkansas.
Marisa Bogart finished with a pair of RBIs. Miranda White, the lone member of the team not to play for LHS, pitched the opening two innings before Kady Crow came in to close the contest.
At the plate, Crow had a single and an RBI.
In their second game, the wheels unexpectedly came off as the eventual tournament champions, the Bat Busters, rolled to an 11-0 shutout victory.
Despite the loss, the Shockers left with plenty of new fans, as numerous scouts and coaches promised to mail questionnaires to the girls after witnessing their skills first hand.
In addition to their play on the diamond, team members took part in SPARQ testing. The acronym stands for speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness.
Hundreds of athletes participated in the testing known as the SATs of athletics.
Shocker players accounted for nine top 10 finishes in various categories.
The team is scheduled to play in three more tournaments with college scouts on hand through November.
