New campuses nearly complete
School days are almost here again and if all goes according to plan over the upcoming weeks, the new Lampasas Independent School District campuses will be ready when the first tardy bells ring.
With all major projects virtually completed at the new Lampasas High School and Taylor Creek Elementary School, only miscellaneous odds and ends remain.
At Monday night's meeting of the LISD Board of Trustees, Business Manager Shane Jones reported that one endeavor remaining is the installation of fiber optic communication lines connecting the old high school campus-turned middle school with the new high school campus. The joint project between the city of Lampasas and the Texas Department of Transportation is expected to be completed on schedule, however.
Minor projects including the completion of athletic facilities and hauling away of dirt from the new high school, as well as fencing around the Taylor Creek campus, remain, according to maintenance director JD Butts.
With the bulk of work finished, smaller items such as chairs, tables and desks are being moved into the new high school. Faculty and staff will begin moving into the building Monday. Teachers already are unpacking their rooms at Taylor Creek.
One question that remains unanswered is how some facilities at the former Lampasas Middle School campus will be used now that it has been vacated.
Last month, the Boys and Girls Club made a proposition to the school board to use portions of the campus for its activities.
LISD Superintendent Randy Hoyer has yet to make a decision on the proposal, but he believes he can provide a response by October. With his plate full as he works toward the first day of school, Hoyer admitted he had little time to consider the topic this month.
While use by the Boys and Girls Club ranks high on the school board's priorities, the facilities will be dedicated for LISD use first, School Board President James Briggs said.
There also is a possibility college classes will be taught on the campus.
In other business Monday, trust- ees rescheduled their Sept. 7 school board meeting to Sept. 14 because of the Labor Day holiday.
Board member Linda Floerke was unanimously approved to serve on the Lampasas Economic Development Corp. board.
In addition, administrative reports showed both Hanna Springs Elementary and Kline Whitis Elementary received "recognized" ratings from the state, while LMS and LHS each were rated "academically acceptable," as was LISD as a whole.
Following a closed session, the board approved the hiring of four teachers: Rosalee Bocanegra. for Spanish at LHS; Tyson Chandler, LMS science teacher; Denise Fluitt at Taylor Creek; and Lynette Reeves, Hanna Springs.
