Football 101

2009-07-31 / Sports

When I decided to get into the teaching/coaching profession 30 years ago, I remember thinking how much fun it would be to work in the best profession there is and have an opportunity to touch the lives of kids.

Little did any university teach that I would not only be touching the lives of kids but also the people who come with them: a mom and dad.

A veteran coach once said that if you are in the banking or education business and deal with someone else's money or kids, you had better get ready because people care deeply about both. Well, I have never been a banker, but I can attest to the latter as far as kids are concerned. I have two children, and I understand how we as parents love our children.

I know how important it is to have a good relationship with the families in our community. I also know that if you want something done, you need to ask a mom. Dads certainly want to help when asked, but moms are always ready and willing.

With this being said, I would like to talk about the upcoming event called "Football 101," which is for women only. We, as the Lampasas Badger football coaching staff, are excited to host the first annual football clinic for the women of Lampasas.

I know many of the women in the community are knowledgeable about the signals made by referees in a football game, but they might not know everything their son does to become a Lampasas Badger. This clinic will allow women to meet the coaching staff, their wives, listen to an official explain about signals, hear poems from some of our senior Badgers, eat a great meal served by the coaching staff, see some great entertainment and have a chance to win some door prizes. It is going to be a great night of relaxation and fun.

We know how important moms are to the success of our total athletic program. The involvement our moms put forth into booster clubs, decorating for banquets, working in concessions and other activities is very appreciated by the coaching staff. It might not be spoken directly to you, but we could not get things accomplished without moms.

We invite you to come out on Monday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. We will be hosting the event at the Hostess House, 1406 South U.S. Highway 281. The cost is $20, which will be paid at the door, and includes a meal prepared by the Hostess House. Please RSVP to Coach McQueen at mcqueenjo@lampasas.k12.tx.us or call 512-921-2470.

If you have any questions, please call or e-mail me. We are so excited about this event and look forward to seeing you there.

Joey McQueen is the Lampasas High School athletic coordinator and the Badgers' head football coach.
