Education officials to speak Tuesday
Gail Lowe The Lampasas County Conservative Club will host an event to introduce new education officials to Lampasas residents.
The event is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Lampasas County Office Building and will feature Gail Lowe, chairman of the State Board of Education, and Randall Hoyer, Lampasas Independent School District superintendent.
They will discuss their perspectives on upcoming state and local public education issues.
A question-and-answer session will follow their remarks.
Mrs. Lowe was named board chairman recently by Gov. Rick Perry to succeed Dr. Don McLeroy of College Station.
Her term as chairman will expire Feb. 1, 2011.
Mrs. Lowe, co-publisher of the Lampasas Dispatch Record, was elected to the State Board of Education in 2002, and reelected in 2004 and 2008. Her district extends to the Oklahoma border and encompasses 26 counties in North and Central Texas.
The three-term Republican was named vice chairman of the State Board of Education's Committee on Planning in 2005, and in 2007, she served as chairman of the Committee on School Initiatives.
Randall Hoyer She is currently a member of the Permanent School Fund Committee.
A previous classroom volunteer in Lampasas, she also served one term on the Lampasas ISD Board of Trustees.
Mrs. Lowe and her husband, Jim, are active members of New Covenant Church, where she serves on the financial review board.
Hoyer was named superintendent of the Lampasas ISD in April, and officially began his tenure July 1.
A Moulton native, Hoyer was at Class 3A Columbus for the past 19 years where he moved up the ranks from teacher to principal then assistant superintendent to superintendent, a position he held for the past five years.
He comes to Lampasas at a momentous time in school history, as the district is preparing to open two new campuses -- a high school and an elementary school -- for the 2009-10 term.
Hoyer has 28 years of education experience and has served in districts from Class 1A through Class 3A.
The superintendent noted earlier this month that he is excited about the opportunities Class 4A Lampasas is presenting him, and he looks forward to his first year in the district.
