Blue Blazes wrap up summer season at TAAF Games of Texas
PHOTO BY CLAY WHITTINGTON Zach Adams earned a bronze medal at the Games of Texas over the weekend. In additon to his third-place finish in the high jump, Adams also competed in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Zach Adams had a busy weekend.
At the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation's Games of Texas, the Blue Blazes member led his squad to its only medal while competing in three events.
Participating in the 16-and-under division, Adams earned a bronze medal in the high jump to highlight the team's trip to the four-day meet at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
In addition to setting his personal record of 6-0 in the high jump, Adams also competed in the 110- meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles, where he placed 14th and 16th, respectively.
Three weekends ago, Adams earned first place in the high jump at the state qualifying meet, clearing 5-10. He also placed third in both of his other events.
The impressive outing at the state meet left Blue Blazes head coach Trent Lancaster pleased about the athlete's future.
"Zach won our only medal and will be back in this same age group next year," the coach said.
Mason Morris appears to have a promising future ahead of him as well. He also competed in multiple events.
Morris placed 15th in the 80 hurdles after finishing 28th in the 800 on the meet's opening day. Morris competed in the 12-andunder division.
Caitlyn Shaughnessy recorded the squad's only other top-10 finish, placing ninth in the 12-andunder 80 hurdles.
"Caitlyn almost got to the finals, missing only by one place," Lancaster said.
Although no Blue Blazes member reached the finals Sunday, the coach knows his team had a successful season.
"All competed well," Lancaster said. "State-level competition is way above any we have experienced."
The only other Blue Blazes to participate were Josh Barbero and Chase Birck. Their events occurred on Saturday.
Barbero finished 16th in the 110 hurdles, while Birck placed 28th in the 400. Both competed in the 14- and-under division.
Cody Crofoot qualified for the state meet with a third-place finish in the 16-and-under discus, but did not compete in the Games of Texas.
"Thanks need to be extended to all the parents who supported their athletes this summer," Lancaster said.
