Two injured in truck wreck
A three-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on Key Avenue resulted in minor injuries for two drivers.
Three Georgetown Transportation 18-wheelers were northbound about 10 a.m. when the first truck in line stopped at a red light at Key Avenue and U.S. Highway 281 near The National Banks of Central Texas.
The second truck began braking, but the driver of the third rig did not realize the 18-wheelers in front of him were decelerating, according to a report prepared by Lampasas Police Department patrol officer Dean Werlinger. The last 18-wheeler did not have time to stop, Werlinger said.
"It was just a chain reaction from there," Werlinger said.
The three vehicles collided, and Capital Ambulance transported the first and second drivers to Rollins Brook Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The first driver complained of neck and back pain, Werlinger said, and the driver of the center truck sustained lacerations to his forehead and left arm. The rear driver was not injured.
The two rear trucks were moderately damaged, Werlinger said, and about 40 gallons of biodegradable antifreeze spilled onto the northbound lanes of Key Avenue. Workers from the city Street Department and the Lampasas Fire Department cleaned up the spill.
LPD Patrol Sgt. Chuck Montgomery, along with patrol officers John Arellano and Carl Boatright, assisted Werlinger.
The inside northbound lane of Key Avenue between South Street and East Ninth Street was closed for about an hour and a half until the rear truck was towed. Traffic was redirected from the outside lane through business parking lots on the east side of Key Avenue.
"I'm just grateful there wasn't more injury than there was," Werlinger said.
