Annual county Farm Bureau contests on tap Saturday
      Four Lampasas County young women will vie for the title of Miss Lampasas County Farm Bureau, and one will earn the right to represent the Farm Bureau at various engagements and competitions. The contest will be Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Farm Bureau Building on U.S. Highway 281 North.

Girl Scout camp registration opens
      Girl Scouts of Central Texas is registering girls entering grades 1-12 for summer camp. Campers do not need to be registered members of Girl Scouts. Summer camps begin June 14 and continue through July 24 at Camp Wood Lake on Lake Brownwood. Camp sessions are overnight and range in length from two nights to five nights. Most sessions begin Sunday and end on Friday.

      Lampasans turned out in good numbers for the annual chamber of commerce fish fry held at the Crawford Party House to honor Fort Hood military personnel.

Sam Prugh to become third colonel in family
      Samuel Houston Prugh, son of Walter L. and Jeanette Prugh of Kempner, is scheduled for promotion in early June to full colonel. In April, Prugh was awarded The Order of Military Merit, the highest honorary distinction of the Brazilian Army.

Church to begin Sunday study
      The Come Thirsty Class at First United Methodist Church is beginning a study of "Born for Battle: 31 Studies on Spiritual Warfare" by R. Arthur Mathews. Class meets Sundays at 10 a.m. Books are available for a suggested $11 reimbursement.

Workshops set for small museums
      Texas heritage is at risk in facilities throughout the state, according to the Texas Historical Commission. With more than 500 local history museums across Texas, less than 25 percent have a plan for dealing with potential emergencies including hurricanes, fires and flood.

Donation given
      The Wal-Mart Foundation has given a $1,000 community grant to Project Graduation for the Lampasas High School Class of 2009. This year's graduates will travel to Austin Park & Pizza to celebrate commencement. Project Grad offers a drug-free, alcohol-free party for graduates.

Quilt raffle
      Lampasas Art Club members are holding a raffle to benefit Lampasas Art Gallery and children's summer art classes. Tickets for the handmade antique quilt -- donated by Mary Tittle -- are $1 each or six for $5, and it will be given away during the Herb/Art Fest on Oct. 10.

Scholarship winners
      Lampasas High School seniors Crystal Elder and Chris Poston are the recipients of a $500 and $1,000 scholarship, respectively, given by Capital Ambulance. The seniors are students in the health science class of Kimberly Kuklies, right, and both plan to continue their studies in related fields.

Physician to speak at graduation
      An accomplished alumni will be one of the speakers at commencement exercises for the College of Science on Monday at the University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Maxwell C. Scarlett, the first African-American graduate of Arlington State College in 1966, will give the alumni welcome at 3 p.m. in Texas Hall.

Steer validation
      The 2010 steer validation for Lampasas County is June 19 at 4 p.m. at the Mike Atkinson ranch. All prospective steer exhibitors who plan to enter major stock shows in 2010 must have a state validation tag, hair samples and nose prints submitted to the State Steer Validation Office.

Tractor show raises funds for camp
      The second annual Tractor Show of Adamsville was chaired by Noah Hartley, who entered his 1945 Farmall "H" tractor, which he rebuilt and restored. The annual event is sponsored by Adamsville Baptist Church, and youth directors Linda Porter and Jeff Brown helped stage the show as a fund-raiser to enable youths to attend camp during the summer.

      A group of Classics at the Classic will cruise to Briggs Saturday for the community's free car show, led by Ken Bernhard.
