Hazardous waste event scheduled

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is a free event Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city's Public Works facility, 201 Brown St.

The event is open to residents of Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills and San Saba counties. Participants must show proof of residency (driver's license, utility bill, etc.).

Items to be accepted include paints, automobile batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, household cleaners, household chemicals, pesticides, flammables, corrosives and other hazardous household products.

Tires from passenger cars and trucks will be accepted with a limit of eight per household. No tire rims will be taken. A $1 surcharge will be placed on each tire over the limit.

The collection is for household products only. Large quantities from businesses, farms or commercial operations will not be accepted.

Prohibited items include infectious and medical wastes, biological and radioactive materials, compressed gas cylinders, ammunition, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and explosives.

The city will provide roll-off containers for citizens to dump bulk trash items.
