Mary Black Davis reviewed "The Last Lecture" by Professor Randy Pausch, professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, with Jeffrey Zaslow, columnist for The Wall Street Journal, during the Feb. 10 meeting of the GFWC/TFWC Pierian Club at the home of Ruth Martin.

The book is about Pausch's being asked to give the last lecture at Carnegie Mellon. He was 47, married with three small children when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given six months to live.

The last lecture is a tradition, and the professor giving it is asked to consider their demise and contemplate on what matters most to them.

According to the book, Pausch did not have to imagine the situation, and he knew there were so many things that needed to be done in that six-month period.

Pausch in his book also said there were things he would have liked to teach his children as they grew up.

His lecture, titled "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," was not about his death, but about living. Pausch said he thought of all the things he had come to believe, and his lecture would be recorded so his children could listen to it as they grew and realize what their father would have told them.

In closing, Mrs. Davis recounted some of the many anecdotes from the lecture.

President Susan Browder conducted the club's business and called for reports.

Mrs. Martin reminded members about the Books and Boots Gala at Lampasas Public Library with retired Gen. James U. Cross as guest speaker. He was a pilot for former President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Sue Zane Faulkner reported on progress of plans for the TFWC Capitol District Spring Convention at First United Methodist Church's Wesley Fellowship Hall on March 18, co-hosted by the TFWC 36 Club.

Carol Wright invited members to the recent signing of the Lampasas County Museum Foundation Inc.'s "Images of America: Lampasas County."

The hostesses were Bennie Bulloch and Carole Marwitz. Twenty-one members were present.

The convention will take the place of the March meeting.

Next club meeting will be April 14 in the home of Ms. Faulkner and Jane McMillin. Hostesses will be Marion Hammett, Karen Cambon and June Davis.

Amy McDaniel, president of the Keystone Square Museum Board, will demonstrate how to preserve personal treasures.
