LHS student gives presentation to club
The GFWC/TFWC 36 Club had two guest speakers at the Feb. 12 meeting at Keystone Square Museum.
James Lansford, the student the club sponsored to attend the Hugh O'Brien Youth Seminar on leadership last summer, spoke about his experiences there. Lansford said he enjoyed the motivational speakers at the HOBY seminar, and he made a lot of friends. He thanked the club for giving him the opportunity to attend.
Judy Smith reminisced and presented a show-and-tell about her grandmother, Jessie Standard, who owned a photography studio in Lampasas from 1918-45.
She displayed pictures and other items that belonged to her grandmother and explained what they represented.
Mrs. Standard did color tinting on the portraits she took, and she made her own Christmas cards with pictures on them. Though she enjoyed taking photos of any subject, her favorite were family members.
She sold her studio to Virgil Wooten in 1940, but continued her studio at home until 1945.
President Amy McDaniel con- ducted the club's business and asked for committee reports.
Treasurer Suzanne Tooley reported on the funds raised at the taco salad lunch and bake sale, showing the club could easily meet its obligations to support its chosen organizations.
Susan Detrick reported items donated for M.D. Anderson at last month's meeting were boxed and ready to go. According to a chart furnished by the hospital, value of the items is $231.42, plus a cash donation of $45. The club was credited for 145 volunteer hours.
Mrs. McDaniel also thanked members for items brought to the February meeting for Lampasas Mission.
Beverly Wood gave a report on the progress of plans for the TFWC Capitol District Spring Convention the club will host with the Pierian Club on March 18 at First United Methodist Church's Wesley Fellowship Hall.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the meeting will follow at 9 a.m. A catered meal will be served, and guest speaker is Tweed Scott, author of "Texas in Her Own Words."
Volunteers were asked to bake cookies and muffins for the coffee hour and morning break.
Twenty-three members were present. Hostesses were Mrs. Tooley, Margaret Oberender, Martha Green and Lorrie Westberry.
The spring convention will take the place of the March meeting. The club will hold its next meeting April 9 at the Hancock Springs Hostess House.
