Disappointing district loss for LHS
PHOTO BY GABE WOLF Head coach Stuart Beckwith, center, shown talking to his team during last week's game versus Hutto, watched his girls shoot 13 percent and commit 16 first-half turnovers in Friday's 62-38 loss to Hendrickson. The Lady Badgers could not buy a shot early against Hendrickson.
Despite playing an inspired fourth quarter, Lampasas' 19-point outburst was not enough to overcome its first-half shooting woes on the road, and the Lady Badgers fell to the Lady Hawks by 24 points, 62-38.
"It was the first time in quite a while that we played without effort," head coach Stuart Beckwith said. "I was a little disappointed.
"The second-half effort was a little better, but we missed some shots we normally make."
The Lady Badgers shot just 13 percent and scored a mere 12 points in the opening half, including a four-point first quarter, while committing 16 turnovers before the break.
Lampasas' inability to score did not truly affect it in the first period as it limited the Lady Hawks to just seven points.
PHOTO BY RICHARD AKRIDGE Sophomore Marisa Bogart, seen attempting a layup during practice last week, displayed a "never-give-up attitude" against the Lady Hawks, scoring four points to go with four steals and four assists. The second quarter was a different story, however, as Hendrickson built a 13-point halftime advantage by outscoring the Lady Badgers 18-8 in the period.
Junior post Lauren Barlow led the team with 16 points.
After emerging as a consistent scorer for the Lady Badgers (5-16, 0-2 district) over the past several weeks, Sarah Bishop hit a wall against Hendrickson, scoring just five points.
"She's taking the same shots from the same spots, and she just couldn't get them to fall," Beckwith said.
The Lady Hawks' advantage grew to a 42-19 lead by the end of the third quarter and they never looked back, cruising to victory.
"They were kind of like sharks, and once things got going well for them they [could smell] blood and the more they shot, the more they went in," Beckwith said.
"[The girls] were very disappointed in themselves. They know they are better than that."
One player who did not disappoint was sophomore guard Marisa Bogart. She finished the contest with four points, four assists and four steals while serving as motivator both on and off the court.
"Bogart displayed a never-giveup attitude," the coach said. "She was constantly encouraging, constantly telling kids not to give up and to play hard.
"It didn't matter what the score was; on the bench and in the game she was supporting her teammates. She was hollering and screaming and when she got in the game, she hustled her tail off."
Like the boys' squad, the Lady Badgers are off today but return to the court Friday evening when they host Lake Travis at 7 p.m. Then they head back out on the road to face the 20th-ranked Lady Mustangs of Marble Falls next Tuesday.
Led by Jules Crooks' team-high 15 points, the freshmen easily won 52-9, while the junior varsity lost 28-24.
