The Lampasas boys' soccer team knocked off Killeen Shoemaker 3- 0 Tuesday evening in the final scrimmage before the squad kicks off its season at the Smithville tournament today with the first round scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

It did not take long for the Badgers to get on the board as Mark Campisi opened the scoring with a header off a Josh Akers throw-in at the 11:52 mark.

Less than 10 minutes later, Lampasas was up by two after Michael Barfield took a pass from Walter Oosthuizen and delivered it to the back of the net.

After halftime, the Badgers struck again, posting the final goal of the match six minutes in when Gibran Moreno slipped the ball past Shoemaker's goalkeeper. Oosthuizen collected his second assist on the goal.

For the second time this preseason, Lampasas goalie Alex Rininger posted a shutout.

The Lady Badgers also wrapped up their scrimmage schedule on Tuesday.

Despite some solid individual efforts, Lampasas fell to Brownwood on the road.

The young squad played a competitive first half, but minor injuries, fatigue and some questionable officiating gave the Lady Badgers fits as the match went on.

"All I can say is that our girls are giving maximum effort, and for that I am proud," head coach Mark Guszak said. "They really are trying. We just don't really have the speed and depth to battle with the two teams we have scrimmaged so far.

"I think we are coming along and will be better when district rolls around, but right now we are working out the kinks."

One positive the coach took from the scrimmage was the play of Sarah Pillow.

"Pillow played her first scrimmage for us, and she was outstanding," Guszak said.

Despite allowing a few balls to slip past, goalkeeper Liz Hawthorn also received high praise for her performance from Guszak.

The Lady Badgers are in Marble Falls today for the opening rounds of regular-season tournament play.

Lampasas plays Canyon Lake at 11 a.m. before facing off against Nederland at 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Lady Badgers are scheduled to match up against the Austin Crockett Cougars at 9 a.m. today.
