CTC lists upcoming non-credit courses
The Continuing Education Department of Central Texas College (CTC) continues enrollment for January classes. Non-credit courses are offered in a variety of areas including arts and crafts, business, computers and classes for lifelong learners.
Publisher 2007 (for lifelong learners age 50 and up): This popular desktop publishing software is not just for newsletters. Students will learn how to use basic tools to create greeting cards, flyers, business cards, web pages, calendars, name tags, recipe books and much more. Class meets Fridays, Jan. 16-30, from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is $41.
Internet and E-mail (for lifelong learners age 50 and up): Explore the Internet and learn how to select an Internet service provider, use web browser, create an e-mail account, use search engines, antivirus programs and download files. Students will also become familiar with Internet security issues and how to use Instant Messenger programs to chat online with friends and family. The class meets Saturdays, Jan. 17- 31, from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is $41.
Water Aerobics for Lifelong Learners (age 50 and up): This is a fun workout with easy-to-follow exercise routines designed to improve cardiovascular conditioning. Using the resistance of the water, the exercises can also improve strength and flexibility leading to better muscular endurance and balance. It's a total body workout including aerobics, toning and stretching. Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 20 to Feb. 26, 9- 10 a.m. The cost is $36.
Glass Mosaic: Make beautiful stained glass mosaic items for the garden. Students will get hands-on experience in mosaic application and grout techniques and also learn how to use a glass cutter, mosaic cutter and pliers. Students must purchase a mosaic kit from the instructor which ranges from $30 to $60. The class will meet Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $18
Listening to Your Business: This hands-on, facilitated workshop will provide potential and existing small business owners and managers critical evaluation tools and action steps needed to maximize growth and profitability. Class will meet Jan. 16 from 1-5 p.m. The cost is $46.
Heartsaver AED with First Aid: Be prepared to help someone in a life-threatening situation. Knowing how to administer CPR effectively could save the life of a family member, friend or coworker. Students are required to purchase a course book. This course meets requirements for childcare workers. The class meets Jan. 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $43.
Graphic Design with Photoshop - Level II: This class builds on the beginners' course in designing artwork and manipulating photographs to create beautiful graphic images. Those who have taken the beginning class or have some experience in using tools and concepts for creating images and editing photographs may take this class. Level II projects include cleaning up old or damaged photos, building a collage and incorporating text and graphics. The class will meet Saturdays, Jan. 17 to Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $84.
Computer Concepts: This beginning class provides an overview of computer and Internet technologies using the new Windows Vista operating system. It will define the basic characteristics of a computer and provide a quick overview of data, information, files, applications software, operating systems, platform compatibility, the Internet and e-mail. Students will discuss computer hardware with several lessons focusing on the various technologies that enable a computer to store and retrieve data and programs. The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 20 to Feb. 26, from 9-11 a.m. Cost is $99 plus $22 for a course textbook.
Piano (ages 13 to adult): This group piano class is for beginners who have little or no piano experience. Focus will be on the keyboard, improvisation and note reading. Class meets each Tuesday, Jan. 20 to Feb. 24, from 5:30- 6:30 p.m. Cost is $89.
Organic Gardening: Learn how to grow nutritious food for one's family without the cost of expensive fertilizers and harmful pesticides. Topics will include soil preparation, chemical vs. organic pesticides, mulching, planting, layout and more. Class will meet each Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 20 to Feb. 5, from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. The cost is $46.
Crocheting for Beginners: Learn how to crochet using worsted weight yarn and create items to wear, decorate your home or sell at bazaars. Students will also learn how to read patterns and crochet using chain, single and double crochet stitches. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 20-29, 6:30-8:30 p.m. The cost is $26.
