Funeral services for James Smith Underwood, 77, of Lometa, who died July 9, 2008, at his residence, were July 14 at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas. Burial followed at Center Cemetery at Lometa.

James Underwood

Mr. Underwood was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Lometa, to Mary and Jack Underwood.

He grew up on the family farm, and after graduating from Lometa High School, he worked to save money for college.

At age 25, Mr. Underwood enrolled in the University of Texas and received a degree in mechanical engineering.

After graduation, he co-founded an engineering firm in Houston.

In November 1961, Mr. Underwood married Sondra Towns.

He retired from Key Engineering then consulted for Expro Americas, working from his farm where he grew up in Lometa.

Survivors include sons, Kent and wife, Ruth, and Clay and wife, Kristi; a daughter, Ruth; and two grandchildren, Jarrod and Kaitlyn.
