Capital murder suspect slated for Aug. 25 trial
      A jury trial is set Aug. 25 in the 27th District courtroom of Judge Joe Carroll for Donald Dean Gower, 40, of Copperas Cove. Gower is charged with capital murder in the July 4 shooting death of his wife, 31-year-old Hidi Gower. He remains in the Lampasas County Jail.

      Seton Highland Lakes Health System, a member of the Seton Family of Hospitals, announces the opening of the new Seton Lampasas Healthcare Center. The new center, located at 1205 Central Texas Expressway, will open for patient care and appointments Monday.

      Judges for the South Texas Press Association named winners recently in the regional newspaper group's 2008 Better Newspaper Contest. The Lampasas Dispatch Record earned two first-place plaques, along with certificates for three third-place entries and two honorable mention awards.

Early voting continues in May 10 elections
      Early voting for Lampasas City Council, Lometa City Council and Lampasas Independent School District elections continues through Tuesday, with the election day set for May 10. As of press time Thursday morning, 205 had voted in Lampasas races, while 13 had cast ballots in Lometa.

Crimestoppers case
      A house fire at 1210 E. Avenue G April 4 has been determined to be arson, said Lampasas Fire Marshal Reece Oestreich. Firefighters were called to the scene at 2:19 a.m., and spent 45minutes extinguishing the blaze. Oestreich said the home was unoccupied at the time.
