L-M Garden Club members earn awards at annual show

Pat McGarry is presented the Sweepstakes Award for having the most blue ribbon horticulture specimens. Flower Show chairman Sherri Stone, left, made the presentation.
Members of the L-M Garden and Civic Club displayed "Texas Attitude" with the myriad horticulture specimens and floral design entries displayed at the annual Flower Show April 21 at the garden club building in Lometa.

Taking the Best in Show award in floral design was Sue Shepperd with her blue ribbon arrangement, "Pride," that showcased a single bloom.

Other design honors went to Sammie Leggett for her centerpiece, "Steak and Twice-Baked Potatoes."

Hannah Kendrick took the blue ribbon for "Wine Country," a design featuring a wine bottle.

Susan Stone's miniature design arrangement, "Tiny Texan," also took a blue ribbon.

This year's Sweepstakes Award for the member having the most blue ribbon horticulture specimens was Pat McGarry. She also earned Award of Merit ribbons for two of her horticulture specimens, an amaryllis and a clematis blossom.

A blue ribbon for "Wine Country" went to Hannah Kendrick.
Other Award of Merit winners were Mrs. Leggett for her yellow columbine specimen; Susan Stone for her yellow iris specimen; and Lewvon Hicks for her pale pink paper flower bougainvillea plant.

Sherri Stone, overall flower show chairman, introduced and thanked the visiting judges, Doris Henry Magnor, Marcia Chown and Hazel McCoy, for their assistance. The judges offered a critique of the various horticulture specimens and design arrangements to help members prepare for next year's show.

Hostesses for the night, Kathryn Butler, Mrs. Leggett and Mrs. Kendrick, carried through with the overall theme of the show serving steak and twice-baked potatoes, while members prepared their favorite side dishes.

In closing, Sabrina McKenzie, garden club president, thanked Sherri Stone for her hard work. Mrs. McKenzie also reminded club members that the May 19 meeting will be the club's annual picnic and plant exchange that will mark the end of the first year of the president's term.
