HOWARD EARNS REGIONAL BRONZE
District 25-4A teams dominate boys', girls' meet

SAN ANTONIO - As it turns out, just clawing out of the District 25-4A Meet was quite an accomplishment.

Senior Jennifer Howard turned in the best showing of the five Lampasas High School athletes at the Region IV-4A Meet at Alamo Stadium Friday and Saturday, finishing third in the high jump and claiming a bronze medal and statealternate designation.

But based on the final team standings, District 25-4A was certainly the class of the region in both the boys' and girls' divisions. Pflugerville Connally claimed the boys' crown with 77 points, followed by Cedar Park Vista Ridge's 68. On the girls' side, Vista Ridge won the title with 119 points, Hendrickson finished second with 52, Pflugerville Connally finished fourth with 36, and Dripping Springs placed sixth with 30.

Howard was the only LHS athlete to score points, and she proved capable of winning the meet. Six girls cleared five feet, two inches, including Howard, but Howard did not clear it on her first attempt as did Rockport-Fulton's Brandi Huff and Corpus Christi Calallen's Amanda Haven. Howard then competed in a jump-off for third through sixth place. In the jumpoff, Howard cleared 5-4 to claim third. She was the only athlete at the meet to clear 5-4.

LHS senior discus thrower Alma Sandoval, who threw 114-11 at the district meet, scratched twice, recording one throw of 89 feet.

"I am proud of both girls," LHS girls' coach Trent Lancaster said.

Sophomore Tyler Phelan paced the LHS boys' contingent, finishing 11th with a triple jump of 41-3.

Junior 300 hurdler Kooper Liverman finished fourth in his qualifying heat in 40.8 seconds, but the time did not qualify him for the finals.

Senior high jumper Clay Tyner, who cleared 6-4 at the district meet, did not record an official height cleared. He appeared poised to clear 6 feet on his second attempt, but he caught a heel on the bar.

"I felt like we competed hard, but I think we let the pressure of being at the regional get to us a little bit," boys' coach Jimmy Randolph said.
