Brookhaven reunion set
The annual Brookhaven reunion is Saturday at the Henry Waskow VFW Hall in Belton, near the Bell County Expo Center.
Former Brookhaven residents, friends, neighbors and acquaintances are invited. Refreshments and fellowship will begin at 10 a.m.
A covered-dish luncheon will be served at noon, followed by recognition and a brief business meeting.
Brookhaven was a vibrant commercial, social and religious farming community in western Bell County prior to World War II. The first school in the community was organized prior to 1882, and many family generations attended school there.
During the last several years of its existence, Brookhaven had a one-teacher school as the result of a dwindling population resulting from the loss of land for the Fort Hood military reservation.
The later expansion of Fort Hood and the building of Belton Dam brought about the demise of the community in the early 1950s.
