Hornets advance to regional track meet

David Cruz
Four Lometa High School girls and two Lometa Hornet boys will compete at the Region IV-1A Meet at Sam Houston State University on April 25-26.

Nayla Rosales, Patricia Viera, Maria Jasso and Taylor Bradley qualified on the girls side, finishing in the top four in their respective events or relays at the area-round meet last week.

David Cruz and Toby Davis advanced on the boys' side.

The top three in each event at the regional meet will advance to the state meet in Austin on May 9-10.

The grouping of Rosales, Viera, Jasso and Bradley advanced in two relays. The girls finished third at the area meet in the 800 relay in a time of 1:54.98 and fourth in the 400 relay at 54.47.

Individually, Bradley also qualified in the 200, running a 28.11. She originally was ruled outside the top four, but meet officials reversed the ruling after checking the official video of the event.

For the boys, Davis will represent the Hornets in two events. He finished third in the shot put and fourth in the discus with a throw of 121 feet, six inches.

Toby Davis
Teammate Tanner Williams threw 121-4 to miss qualifying for regionals by two inches.

"They had some good throwers down there, so Toby faced some good competition," Lometa head coach Wendell Bradley said. "It's always a dogfight to get out, but it gives the top throwers a chance to advance beyond the region."

David Cruz qualified in the 400 meters, running a time of 55.28.

"David qualified even though he had just come off the course after walking 18 holes of golf at the district meet," Bradley said. "He's capable of running about three seconds faster than he did at the area meet."

Lometa's Shoshanna Vandergriff finished sixth in the 100, and Kylie Bradley finished sixth in the discus.

Jasso finished eighth in both the long jump and triple jump.

The 1600 relay team of Maribel Reyes, Rosales, Elisha Whisenhunt and Jasso ran a 4:45.86.

On the boys' side, Lometa's 400 and 800 relay teams both finished fifth. The 400 relay team of James Logsdon Trent Cavness, Eric Belyeu and Manuel Hernandez ran a 46.87, and the 800 team of Logsdon, Brandon Faubion, Cavness and Hernandez ran a 1:39.08.

Nayla Rosales
Williams finished sixth in the shot put, Logsdon finished sixth in the long jump, and the 1600 relay team composed of Logsdon, Faubion, Bubba Salinas and David Cruz placed sixth.

Curtis Crain finished eighth in the 110 hurdles, while Cavness, Salinas and Johnny Aldrich placed eighth in the 100, 300 hurdles and 200, respectively.
