LAFTA slates annual fund-raising event

T.J. Mabrey's donated piece will be auctioned to benefit Lampasas Association For the Arts.
Lampasas Association for the Arts will hold a fund-raiser May 3 at Mesquite Creek. Dinner, featuring a grilled beef tenderloin, will be catered by the Yumm Factor, and wine will be provided by Pilar Bluff Vineyard.

The evening will kick off at 5 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and wine, while guests bid on silent auction items. Dinner and a live auction will follow.

Musical guests will be Bracken Hale and Derek Groves.

Admission is $75 per person.

This year's auction offerings include "Story Boat," donated by sculptor T.J. Mabrey. Constructed and carved, the piece is made of iron, limestone, cedar and gold leaf. Mrs. Mabrey created it in 2007 for "The Boat Show" exhibition in Lampasas and Temple.

"The boat has a story waiting to be told by the viewer who may recognize familiar pieces that were welded together to make up the iron element which stands on the limestone boat," said Mrs. Mabrey, who is one of the original sculptors at Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden in Campbell Park.

Other artists donating their work for auction include Nancy Gray, Mike Thomas, Pablo Solomon and Jan Fallon. In addition, Mezger Enterprises donated a custom stone bench, and Pat Cavness has given a low-line Angus steer, ready for processing.

All auction items will benefit LAFTA, a non-profit organization.
